Orientation Extravaganza DUs North Campus Buzzes With New Students

  • 2024-09-02 05:22:24

The Vishwavidyalaya Metro station witnessed thousands of new students arriving for their first day at Delhi University's North Campus. These students navigated through the crowd, eager to commence their college journey. Delhi University welcomed a new batch of first-year undergraduate students on Thursday, confirming over 68,500 admissions following the release of the second merit list on August 25. Nearly all colleges conducted orientation programmes to greet the newcomers. Not even the morning showers could dampen the day's proceedings.

Rashmi Taneja, arrived at Hindu College from the Metro station, calling it the institute of her dreams. "I could not sleep last night. I kept thinking about the friends I am going to make, the societies I am going to join, the food I am going to explore," Taneja remarked as she stepped into the college for the first time.

Some colleges staggered their orientation programmes into different time slots to manage the large influx of students and parents. No regular classes were held across most colleges except for Kirori Mal College, which conducted its orientation on Wednesday. Hansraj College held a "havan" ceremony to inaugurate the new academic year. The college also organized early morning sports activities, performances by its music society, and an anti-ragging rally led by its NCC and anti-ragging committee. Additionally, institutions like Shri Ram College of Commerce and Ramjas provided lunch for students and parents following their orientation programmes.

Many colleges have initiated the process of acquainting students with elective courses and extracurricular societies. For instance, authorities at Aurobindo College distributed Google forms to students for selecting ECA societies. Principal Vipin Aggarwal stated, "We encourage each student to join at least two or three societies during their college life."

Diganshi Singh, an incoming student at Ramjas, expressed her enthusiasm for joining the dance committee, stating, "There was a performance by seniors during the orientation that was captivating. I have always been passionate about dancing." Amidst the lively atmosphere of DU's first day, new students began forming groups in college halls, eager to establish friendships for their forthcoming journey.

Sanskriti Bisht from Uttarakhand shared her excitement about experiencing the "North Campus vibes." She added that she and her newly-found companion Muskan from Chandigarh are eager to attend college fests and visit Majnu ka Tila. These two Hansraj-admitted students agreed that DU had always been in their plans.

Thursday marked DU's deadline for colleges to verify and confirm admissions for students allocated through the second merit list. Additional allocations have been made by DU in all colleges to expedite the completion of the admissions process. Nevertheless, some teachers and principals have voiced concerns over these extra allocations, believing it may lead to confusion if not all additional students are accommodated.

The admission process is not yet complete; DU will announce dates for a third round of seat allocations at an undetermined date. Officials assured that any remaining admissions and candidates in supernumerary quotas such as CW or armed forces, ECA (extracurricular activities), sports, and ward will be allocated seats accordingly.
