Smriti Irani the Union Minister launched Avesta Pahlavi Study Centre at Mumbai University

Union Minister Smriti Irani recently launched Avesta-Pahlavi Study Centre at Mumbai University. The University signed an MoU with the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs to setup Avesta-Pahlavi Study centre.


Avesta-Pahlavi Study Centre is setup for the study of the ancient and rich Parsi-Zoroastrian culture. The centre focuses on important areas like Zoroastrian scriptures and culture, classical literature, and spirituality. Its mission is to promote diverse Indian cultures across borders and encourage global collaborations. With a financial support of 12 crores from the Union Ministry, Mumbai University will create a language lab, multimedia studio, and supporting infrastructure.


The objective of Avesta-Pahlavi Study centre is to preserve and protect the Avesta-Pahlavi legacy, study Parsi-Zoroastrian culture, explore the Parsi community’s contribution to India’s development and cultural diversity. The Mumbai University aims to introduce Master’s, Ph.D, Certificate and Diploma courses in Avesta-Pahlavi studies.


The launch of the centre signifies a key development in University’s commitment to fostering cultural diversity. Smriti Irani also highlighted the need to train young Parsis in ethnic skills and assured them that, they may be financially assisted by the ministry to pursue entrepreneurship.


Furthermore, Ravindra Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University, also highlighted the importance of studying the rich cultural heritage of the Parsi Community and Zoroastrian culture. He emphasized the importance of promoting our Indian culture across borders.

    The Mumbai University recently announced that it will hold its annual convocation ceremony on Feb 7, at the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Hall in the Fort campus. UGC President, Professor M Jagdesh Kumar will be the Chief Guest for the annual convocation ceremony. It will also be attended by the Governor of Maharashtra, Ramesh Bais. Mumbai University will be awarding 425 Ph.D degrees during the annual convocation ceremony – a 15% increase from last year.
