Mumbai University to award 425 PhD degrees on Feb 7 2024

The Mumbai University recently announced that it will hold its annual convocation ceremony on Feb 7, at the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Hall in the Fort campus. UGC President, Professor M Jagdesh Kumar will be the Chief Guest for the annual convocation ceremony. It will also be attended by the Governor of Maharashtra, Ramesh Bais. Mumbai University will be awarding 425 Ph.D degrees during the annual convocation ceremony – a 15% increase from last year.
During COVID, a smaller number of Ph.Ds were awarded by the varsity. As per the data shared by them - in 2021-22, 211 Ph.Ds were awarded and last year 367 Ph.D degrees were awarded to students. As per the officials, the numbers are steadily moving towards normalcy. University’s Vice Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni said that, with the increase in the total no of students completing their Ph.D, an overall rise in Ph.D registration is also seen.
One of the varsity officials said that, due to the pandemic effect, candidates could not complete their research, however the rise in numbers was anticipated as large number of students were able to complete their tasks. Furthermore, he also added that candidates were also granted a two-year extension, considering the limitations imposed by the COVID pandemic.
