  • 2024-05-31 08:46:05

In a circular, Periyar University had advised students to abstain from donning black attire during their commencement exercises. The esteemed Governor R N Ravi was scheduled to preside over the momentous occasion, celebrating the institution's 21st graduation ceremony.

In an official statement, University Registrar K Thangavelu stated, "In compliance with the request from the Salem police, it is advised for the attendees of the ceremony to refrain from wearing black clothing and bringing mobile phones". However, clarifying that the department did not issue any such directive, Police Commissioner of Salem, B Vijayakumari said, "We have not directed the university to circulate such a notice. Our responsibility is to ascertain that proper security measures are in place during the event. We visited the university to supervise the security preparations and did not communicate anything resembling what had been stated in the circular. It is the university's stance”.

Later, Periyar University rescinded its contentious prohibition on black attire for the convocation ceremony. This educational institution in Salem was prepared to conduct a convocation ceremony on the 28th of June, for students completing their studies during the academic year of 2021-22.
