Gujarat Government Appoints M. Nagarajan to Oversee Sabarmati University Amid Allegations of Misconduct and Irregularities.

The Education Department of the Gujarat Government appointed M. Nagarajan, the Director of Higher Education, as the administrator of Sabarmati University. Previously known as Calorx University, the institution is owned by the contentious management of DPS East School in Ahmedabad, which has faced accusations of leasing space to Swami Nithyananda's ashram located in the Hathijan area of the city.

Anju Sharma, Principal Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, revealed that an inquiry was initiated following allegations against the university for selling PhD degrees in violation of established norms. Additionally, there were suspicions of financial misconduct.

Sharma disclosed that documents submitted to the Sikkim Government for recognition as a private university listed the names of the registrar and principal as promoters. "We have been diligently working to ensure that discrepancies are identified for the benefit of education and students," she asserted.

Officials indicated that Sabarmati University admitted students into its PhD programs without conducting requisite examinations, granted degrees based solely on dissertations, and conferred degrees to numerous candidates before they completed the minimum period mandated by UGC guidelines.

The Education Department made this decision subsequent to a four-member committee's investigation in March, which highlighted various illegalities perpetrated by Sabarmati University.

The committee also detected financial discrepancies. Consequently, a Director of Higher Education has been designated as the administrator to oversee the affairs of the university in accordance with Section 43(5) of the Gujarat Private Universities Act, 2009.
