Anna University Secures patent for groundbreaking drone technology

  • 2024-09-12 07:05:24

The researchers at the Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University Chennai, have developed an innovative drone technology poised to transform the future of drone operation.

The Indian patent office has granted a baton for an air-borne, intelligent, autonomous landing system for many unmanned aerial vehicles. This allows Precise identification of landing sites using images captured from multiple angles.K. Senthil Kumar, Professor and director of Dr. Kalam's advanced UAV research center in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at MIT explained that the technology is precious for delivering supplies such as weapons, ammunition, medicines, and food to armed forces stationed in remote or inaccessible locations, unlike traditional UAVs, which require predetermined flat landing zones. This advanced system can accurately locate a specific target, such as a colored object or dress, and land safely on even and uneven or even sloped terrains.

Once the landing site is identified, the UAV autonomously calculates the position and coordinates and executes the landing, even on moving platforms. This process can also be enhanced by using QR codes for added reliability. The entire operation.is powered by artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms significantly reducing landing time and increasing efficiency.

This system is designed for higher altitude logistics, assisting armed and border security forces with the delivery of essential supplies, emergency relief, rescue operations, and combat support. Beyond defense, the system has potential civilian applications, including firefighting surveillance, organ and medicine delivery in Healthcare, and product delivery for e-commerce.

This invention represents a major advancement in drone technology, revolutionizing package delivery, which currently relies primarily on air drops from specific altitudes.
